Newark-on-Trent is a market town in Nottinghamshire, with a population of 27,700. The town lies on the River Trent.

Newark has possible Roman origins. The town was besieged during the English Civil War by Parliamentarian forces. The Relief of Newark was a Royalist victory in 1644. Sites of interest include Newark Castle, a twelfth-century castle that was restored during the nineteenth-century. King John died at the castle in 1216. The Church of St Mary Magdalene is Grade I listed and was restored during the nineteenth-century. The Governor's House dates to the sixteenth-century. The Palace Theatre offers music, drama, film and dance performances. The National Civil War Centre and Newark Museum are located in the town. Other facilities in the town include a leisure centre.

There are two railway stations in Newark: Newark North Gate and Newark Castle. The two stations offer services to destinations including Doncaster, London, Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham and Leicester. There are bus services in operation in the town.
